Joonsang Chung from Redwood Park took his first step into the world of professional golf at Taupo today when he added a flawless five under par round of 67 to his earlier 73 thus being the winning medallist at the PGA Q School for 2011.
A chip-in birdie on the par three, birdie four on the par five fifth hole, a two metre eagle putt on eleven, a birdie three on the long par four 13th, and pars everywhere else was the story of his round.
His two round total of four under par was two shots ahead of Waipukurau’s Pieter Zwart (74 68), while a playoff was needed to determine the third placegetter from the five tied on 145.
Hogan Cho, Pat Harold, Doug Millington, Keiran Muir and Scott Wightman (Institute of Golf) all parred the first hole so it was on to the par five second. Cho was out of bounds off the tee, while Millington hit the boundary trees and dropped down short, allowing him only a lay-up second.
Muir was fairway centre with a three wood off the tee while Harold and Wightman were too long and through the fairway dogleg. Wightman played a strong second adjacent to the greenside bunker but Harold found the green in two, leaving a 15 metre eagle putt. Cho was gone but as the others also fell away Harold lagged the putt up to the hole and took out the spot with a tap-in birdie.
Chung, Zwart and Harold are now guaranteed starts in all PGA events up to and including Charles Tour level.
Gi Young Seo (North Shore), Ben Guilford (Insitute of Golf) and Logan Scott (North Harbour) rounded out the other qualifiers.

Well done to both Ben for regaining his card for 2011 and to Scott for gaining his card for this year. A lot of hard work has gone into securing his card and the hard work has paid off.
