igolfs Mike Hendry wins by 5, extends NZPGA OOM

Wet weather could not cool off igolf’s Mike Hendry as he notched his second straight win on the New Zealand PGA Tour, taking out the Sharpies Golf/Wilson Kaikoura Pro-Am in Kaikoura yesterday.

The igolf professional fired a 36-hole 12-under par total of 132 to win by five strokes from igolf’s Alex Tait.

Heavy rain on Saturday night saw yesterday’s second day of play in the team’s event cancelled, but the professionals returned to a wet course for their second 18 holes yesterday afternoon.

North Harbour’s Richard Lee set the early pace firing a course record 10-under 62 on Saturday but his lead was quickly washed away yesterday.

Hendry started the second round three shots off the pace set by Lee, but an exceptional 67, including an eagle and six birdies to go with three bogeys, in the trying conditions was enough to see him a comfortable winner.

Tait added a 70 to his first-round 67 to finish five shots off the pace, while Troy Ropiha had the day’s second best round, with six birdies and two bogeys in his 68, that saw him finish third on 138.

Lee could only muster a disappointing 77 yesterday to slip back to fourth equal with Carl Brooking.

The win sees Hendry extend his lead in the New Zealand Order of Merit, now leading by over $15,000.

Lee now moves in to second spot after Hendry’s previous closest challenger, Brenden Stuart, could only manage eighth.

The igolf professional players now go to Perth, to play in the Western Australia PGA Events. Hendry will meet igolf’s Brad Shilton and Hamish Robertson over there.
